The Institute of Optoelectronics (IOE) at the Military University of Technology in Warsaw will share the apparatus developed at the Laser-Matter Interaction Team within the Lasers4EU project. The project began on October 1, 2024.
“The unique apparatus will be useful for research in the areas of material sciences, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, laboratory astrophysics and biomedicine. Its operation is based on laser-plasma X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) sources using a pulsed gas shield. These sources were also developed in the same scientific team,” explains Prof. Henryk Fiedorowicz of the IOE WAT.

As he explains, the Lasers4EU project provides a platform for external users to access the European laser research infrastructure. Europe's leading laser research centers, including WAT's Institute of Optoelectronics, offer researchers from academia and industry access to state-of-the-art laser technology and research services.

An important part of the project is a series of comprehensive training courses related to the equipment provided. Their participants will enrich their theoretical and practical knowledge with specialized information on laser technologies and applications.

“The launch of the EU co-financed Lasers4EU project marks a new era in research on lasers and their applications,” believes Prof. Fiedorowicz. According to him, a coherent and comprehensive scientific consortium ensures access to high-quality research services.

The project is expected to increase the geographic coverage of the European research infrastructure, support new initiatives in this area and foster cooperation between laser centers. One of the objectives is also to increase the number of specialists in the field of lasers and their applications in Europe. Comprehensive training is expected to provide the next generation of scientists with the skills and knowledge needed to take full advantage of Europe's leading laser infrastructures.

The inaugural meeting of the Lasers4EU project, with the participation of representatives of all contributing scientific units (the so-called kick-off meeting), was held in Heraklion, Crete, on October 21-22, 2024.

Detailed information on the Lasers4EU project, including the research infrastructure offered and guidelines for future users and rules for gaining access to it, is posted on the project website at lasers4.eu.
