81st Anniversary of the Outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising
At exactly 5:00 PM, known as “W Hour,” sirens will sound across Poland, and citizens will pause for a minute of silence to honour the heroes who fought for freedom. The Warsaw Uprising began on August 1, 1944, as an armed insurrection by the Home Army against the German occupiers. It lasted 63 days—until October 2—and claimed the lives of thousands of insurgents and around 200,000 civilians. After the capitulation, the city was almost completely destroyed. Commemorative ceremonies are held in Warsaw and many other cities across Poland to honour the insurgents and civilian victims. The central celebrations in the capital are planned at the Warsaw Uprising Monument in Krasiński Square and at the Warsaw Insurgents Cemetery in Wola. The events will be accompanied by holy masses, concerts, exhibitions, memorial runs, and meetings with surviving participants of the uprising. It remains a symbol of resilience, courage, and the pursuit of freedom. This year’s commemorations are not only a tribute to those who perished but also an important history lesson for younger generations. The community of the Polish Air Force University also remembers this special anniversary. On July 30, a delegation took part in a ceremony at the Freedom Park on the grounds of the Warsaw Uprising Museum, where the official celebrations of the 81st anniversary of the heroic struggle began. Additionally, on the eve of the anniversary, a historical lecture was held at the University Club, delivered by Dr. Tomasz Osiński from the Department of Polish and General History at the University’s General Education Department. It was a unique opportunity to reflect on the bravery, sacrifice, and heroism of the Warsaw insurgents, who will forever remain in our memory.
