The Polish Army team wins NATO chess tournament

Between 4th and 8th June the XXIX NATO chess championship took place in Texas Tech University in Lubbock, USA. The Polish Army representation won the NATO team champion title.

67 people from 10 allied countries participated in the tournament altogether. The Polish Army team included WAT soldiers: 2nd Lt. Aleksander Stańkowski and Sgt. cdt. Marcin Pietruszewski. In the team classification the successive places belong to: 1. Poland, 2. Germany, 3. Greece, 4. USA, 5. Denmark.


Individually, gold was awarded to cdt. Anastasios Pavlidis, Greece with 6 points, silver to 2nd Lt. Damian Graczyk from Special Unit of Military Police in Mińsk Mazowiecki with 5,5 points and bronze to Pvt. Elijah Everett from Germany.


Having won the team championship title, the Polish chess players commemorated in this way the 100th anniversary of regaining independence by Poland.
