SSWO Piotr Smuga’s military career started in August 1991 in the Air Force Ground Personel School in Olesnica, Poland. After three years of military education he graduated as a Junior Warrant Officer in 49^th Attack Helicopter Regiment in Pruszcz Gdanski, Poland. His first assignment was weapon operator of Mi-2 and Mi-24 helicopter. During next nine years he was serving as a technician, senior technician and  Squadron NCO. SSWO Smuga became Command Senior enlisted Leader of the 49^th Attack Helicopter Regiment in 2005 and he was holding this position up to 2012. He became Command Senior Enlisted Leader in 49^th Army Aviation Base in 2012. He was sent to Eurocorps Strasbourg, France in 2015 where he was serving three years as a G7 Senior NCO. He was serving from 1918 to 2020 (December)  as a Command Senior Enlisted Leader to the 2^nd  Tactical Wing in Poznan, Poland. SSWO Smuga next position was Enlisted advisor to the Commander of the Air Operations Center. SSWO Smuga was Command Senior Enlisted Leader to the Armed Forces Operational Command Poland from April 2021 to January 2023. SSWO Piotr Smuga  has been serving as a Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chief of Defence since January 2023.

SSWO Smuga was deployed in 2005 to Iraq as Chief Squadron, 2009 to NATO Training Mission IRAQ as J2-J3 NCO, 2011 to Afghanistan as a S2 NCO, 2012 to Afghanistan as a TOC NCO.

SSWO Smuga was awarded  Campaign Star for Iraq (2), Campaign Star for Afghanistan (2), Silver Medal of Merit for National Defense, Silver Medal Armed Force in the Service of the Country, NATO Non-Article 5 Medal for OIF and ISAF, Multinational Division Center-South Medal, NCO Professional Development Medal No 5 and others.

SSWO Smuga’s military and civilian courses and education include Ground Personnel Warrant Officer School, Military Leadership Course, NATO Advanced Senior Enlisted Course. He has earned his Bachelor Degree in Crisis Management from Ateneum Academy in Gdansk, Poland. SSWO Smuga is graduate of Class 57 of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.

SSWO Smuga is married to Dorota, and together they have two children.
