Marta Nowakowska from Military University of Land Forces from Poland wrote down her impressions for us.
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart” said Nelson Mandela, former president of multicultural South Africa, first democratic president after decades of apartheid. This sentence was the motto of week workshops in communication.

During second week of October myself and my colleague from work, Paulina Mastalerz, went to the city of hot chestnuts, fado music and delicious wine – Lisbon - for workshops for teachers about “Communication in Leadership”.

The goal of that workshop was to teach ourselves how to effectively teach cadets (and future leaders among them) how to communicate with their people, how to make them follow the commanders, how to work in a team and control emotions. Theoretical part of the workshop tought us about the concepts of commander and leadership and the difference about them, role of the leader and commander in the Organizations, leadership styles and models of commander and leadership. All theory was checked by the practical classes where we had to dissolve problems concluded in several scenarios.

The most alluring classes refered to the psychological context of communication – empathy, emotional intelligence and models of rational decision making. We were role-playing different characters (different then ours), working with our emotions with horses and building an international team during exercise of running away from prison scenario.

After a week we might no speaks other man’s language, but definitely know how to talk to his heart.
